I just came back after a year layoff due to the very positive things I have been hearing about the game.  At launch, I played a monk and was relatively unimpressed with the class especially when compared to the healers, who at the time were virtual gods.  How has the monk changed since then?  I am an avid Pvper and would like to know how the monk stacks up in 1 on 1 pvp play?  Lastly, what style would you recommend for a monk solo pvp’er.

I know the monk has been patched recently and am tentative about taking the advice from older forum post.  Thank you for any help you can give : )

pvp isnt my element so i cant advise you there.

The changes recently to monks in general are over all fabulous.  the class is coming into its own, currently theres really only one choice though and thats harmonious, its the most finished and most polished.  Its stances are the most balanced and its got a good balance of debuffs and attacks.

Dragon does okay dmg, and its probably the highest dmg at lvl 15, but at 30 then 50 the other 2 forms catch up to the point where id say its a virtual 3 way tie.  Bewarned they still have no mitigation and are probably the most dificult to solo with.

Drunken are still decent choices for tanking, but dont expect to use jeering kick non stop to hold agro.  Youll need decent dps and a good combo of foolhard swagers and medium stance.

Thanks for the info!

Quick question, does the 25% endurance reduction of Hamonious Defensive stance negate the 25% endurance penalty of of Aum of Liat?

It should, and it should now stack with aum ti, however im not sure if you get a 45% reduction, or a 20% reduction, then a 25% reduciton of the remaining.

Aka 50 end skill could be ---45% reduced to 27.5 end
or it could be reduced to 30 end (25% of 50 then 20% of remainder)

Id have to check but am not really motivated to switch to harmonious at the moment.

I took your advice and went harmonious and love it!  So far (I’m level 20), it is solid in PvP.  For the most part, I win over most melees and spell casters, including healers and about 50/50 versus the speedy run and shooters.  In closed spaces, like the Khal bank , I am unbeaten!

*The pvp fights I am basing this on are with foes plus or minus 2 levels from me.

The advantage I see with this style is constant Jin regeneration.  In a pvp server that means that even in a city you can start or react to fight with a full jin bar.  Many a foe has fallen to a series of 3 Ashen hand attacks in a row followed by reactive combos!  The debuffs are also very useful in humbling heavy armor wearers and 3 shoting clothies.

My next question is this:  What weapon should I concentrate on leveling, meaning at 50, which monk weapons are the best in terms of performance and availability.  I’d hate to level up a skill only to find that at end game, all the weapons of that type are inferior to the ones I did not level up.

Thanks for the help!

I have a level 23 monk and curently leveling up Bladed staff, martial sword, ulak claws, handwraps and some in shuriken. Once all are maxed out each level i dont have any points left over for the combat staff though  Undecided

I use the martial sword mainly when soloing and need that extra % chance to parry. But for damage when in groups either the ulak claws and a hand wrap combo or the bladed staff. Hope this helps, and yeh I am harmonious to on Halgar server and its a blast to play.  laugh

personally i did

bladed staff, martial staff, martial sword, hand wraps

For a pvp build id probably go

Shurikens, martial sword, martial staff (common drops) , ulaks, fist wraps....leaving blade staff out because they are only for high end quests and player made.
