Hey guys, I just made my first monk in any mmorpg ever and I am really enjoying it but I had a few questions.

Do any of our stats increase the chance of getting a crit? I have noticed I crit quite a bit, and it seems to be a signature aspect of monks, so I was wanting to know if I could get gear, or ability increases that boost that advantage even more.

Also I am looking to meet some other monks in game, I don't see very many! Im Lokii on the new Xeth server (recently merged one), also looking for crafters to help me out with gear.

this is my first post on this website, and I just wanted to say this is an awesome place for info, a lot of posts and info from diff sections have helped a lot, I just hope I will be able to contribute as well in the near future..

oh, and did you know vanguard has its own podcast? well it does and the guys on it are hilarious!! Me and my pal Malachii have been talking with em via email, and hopefully we might get an interview on it, so listen in!

again thx for everything

Go harmonious and use Tiger stance which will give you an insane critical rate in exchange for semi crazy endurance costs.

Few tips for ya!

Dex increases Crits. but there is a cap of +18% crit rate from dex. (i think the actual number may be different)
Also player made armor with "pain" crystals will make Jagged armor which all adds + crit rate.  I would recomend Jagged (Pariah/Cavalers) Breastplate with assassins mark, and jagged legs with a mightly proc.
Also, hand to hand weapons all have a bonus to crit rate.

If all you are interested in is Crits, then i would go harmonious.  However I am bias and i prefer over all high dmg and ass such i went dragon.  We dont get as high a crit rate, but all of our attacks do an addition 25% (i think) dmg at 50.  As is i crit enough that i can burn all 5 offensive chains before they refresh.  Besides flying kick, I can consistantly keep them all used up even with our level 50 aum that decreases refresh time.

Also, do yourself a favor, and focus  str over dex.  You can put 4 into each, each lvl so they will both get pretty high.  Str adds perm. damage to each attack and the dmg added doesnt decrease when you lvl.  AKA 400 str at 30 adds the same dmg as 400 str at 50.   However, dex does decrease.  400 dex at 30 may cap your crit percent, but at 50 you need 900 to get the same crit percent.

At 50 i have 600 str 550 dex.  I could easily have 750 str, but i chose a more balanced set of gear at 50 due to the fact that i reach the stat cap for str in most groups so id rather reach the str AND dex cap instead of just one.

Anyway thx again for the info and helping me make up my mind about all this craziness

Just a heads up.   The pain crystal armor is going to be rare and expensive, and i think you can only get t4 and t5 versions of it.

Just look for armor that says +melee critical hit chance

Although until 30ish chances are you will be like me and just end up wearing random trash, and then get the celestial ward armor.  That armor will last till 40+ and you can slowly replace it with + crit armor.

You COULD do gorgalok swamp armor as it adds nice crit, however i feel atm the armor is just as hard to get as player made (aka not that hard) and as such neither is that good

Listen to Fuji, he's spot on. End game, the +Crit gear really helps our crit chances out a lot and a monk with more DEX then strength end game is likely underpowered because some of the DEX will go to waste. Monks need strength as their primary, dex as secondary, then CON or VIT last (you really have to invest a lot of points into CON to see the difference, though)

Since you're on Xeth, you won't have trouble finding +CRIT gear. I would suggest talking to Basic, he has fair prices and can make T5 crafted gear with pain crystals (+crit) on the fly.

Great to see another monk on Xeth!

Hey Xeth monks! I'm a level 31 drunken monk myself. Looking forward to soaring leap.

Where can I find some more information about Celestial Ward armor? Is it better oriented for monks than gear from The Arena or is it just personal preference?

Marsh of Peril = Celestial Ward

http://forums.tentonhammer.com/showthread.php?t=17721

As far as faction, if you evil, do the kill 50 blood  howlers quest, it turns into kill 100, and just do that up till your 2k.  You CAN just get a list of whats needed for your armor, go farm them.  Then when you finally get the faction go turn them in.
Drane armor : http://vg.curse.com/database/items/?q=Drane%27s&level_min=&level_max=40&race=&class=15&s=&st=1&sv=0

Personally i never did the Celestial ward and i regret it.   I did the cragwind legendary weapon quest (which at 30 was best weapon in the game till 48) but i felt gyped armor wise.  If you go full out celestial ward till you have the full suit of armor + the celestial throwing stars you will not regret it, that armor will last well till 45+ At which point you should just start replacing it with either t5 crafted or gorgalok armor.

PS.  XETH monks represent.   Name is fujitsu - look me up.
PSS  I AM doing the the throwing star quest now because of the upgrades promised.  290 dmg, 40 range, +5 crit hit.  They will actualy be better then uncommon t5 finally.

Great information Fujitsu, thanks!

Is there a reason why you can't do both the Celestial ward and the Cragwind weapon quest? Stormslam looks very nice.

Uh - The hardest part about doing both are the time investment.

Faction and armor for Celestial ward will take from lvl 28-40

Cragwind took me from 30-35 to get the slivers (constant group) then 37 by the time we were high enough to beat the last one.

If i had to pick i would do CW then go back and do stormslam.

I did celestial ward with my Pally, actually I kinda did it-t was too boring to get all the faction and the gear wasn't good enough to justify doing it (mainly because CW heavy armour looked crap) but for my monk I will definately try do it for the throwing weapon.

For younger monks, I'd go Hunters League quests on Qalia, that should do until you are high enough for Celestial Ward

Im a human monk so skill choice is easy-i put 5 in Dex and Str, no need to pick and choose.  Also have 4 spare points for Con.   The downside to this is I cant get my str as high as say an orc

Celestial ward was REALLY boring, i hate faction more then anything, but i was doing it solo at 50.  However i think for a monk, most (if not all) the armor there will last you till 50 when you can either get swamp armor or player madded jagged armor.

Sadly, there's no t4 version of focusing pain, so it's only t5. On my server (Halgar) it would cost you 1p. Do keep in mind that 1 crystal = 5 armors. Sadly you can't use it for both armors and weapons, so it's either a pair of wraps or 5 pieces of armor. If you use it for armor either do not add any resonating at all, or add those that only give procs. This way you'll get more STR/DEX and much more crit rating on it. Just be careful, as some proc resonatings add HP as well as resonating enchantment. This is very relevant for chest and legs pieces, you'll get like 85 more crit on chest and around 40 more on legs if you do this.

BTW does anybody know if there's a cap for crit chance/rating that comes from gear (not DEX)?

The short answer is yes.

The reason being is there is an overall cap on crit %, meaning no matter what you cant crit more then a certain %.

At the moment log parsing is incredibly sloppy due to bad code, but my parses indicate that its roughly 66% is the crit cap.

Dex is caped at 20% crit at 900 dex
Dual wielding nets 5% crit main hand + 2.5% off hand
Harmonious monks get +30% from their offensive stance
Then its buffs/gear to get the remaining 10%, which was usualy a breastplate and a ranger buff.

On harmonious i noticed after about 60% i stoped seeing returns from additional buffs and gear, and could even go 2 handed and have about the same crit rate.

Its considerably harder for non harmonious monks to reach the cap, and as such they will most likely be using a full suit of + crit, and even then with full buffs will only hit maybe 50% crit.

Dragon
20% - Dex
7.5% - dual wield
5% - stance
~12% from gear (give or take a few % depending on how you get it made)
5-15% from buffs - about 50-55% crit rate.

Thus the long answer is no, since you would need 5-6% crit on every piece of armor to get to the cap, and thats just not an option.
