Monk Weapons

I haven't played a monk since their revamp in ebta even though I'm a monk now. So some thing surprise and confuse me.
Completely unarmed appears to grant the crit bonus % chance that hand to hand wepaons do.
Martial Staves are definately NOT cirtting for double damage when you use an ability, auto attack may be however.
For some reason if my Martial staff has 40 DPS and my unarmed damage is something like 25 DPS/15 dps (numbers made up for an example), unarmed seems to crit for more damage. Ar at least similar, which seems wrong.
Somebody pelase help me out and explain the differences and why anybody would use a weapon? Is it just bugged?

The reason you would use a weapon over your fists is because of the bonus the weapon gives. Some weapons give % Parry chance, which obviously would be used in tanking situations. Some weapons give more crit chance, which again, can be situational depending on the quality / how rare the weapon is and how much DPS it has, and whether or not it would benefit you greater than just using your fists.
I was using a Martial Staff that gave +20% Parry chance. I used this strictly for tanking, and I definately noticed the difference in my survivabilty. Sure, I noticed the drop in my DPS, but I definately felt like I was surviving a lot longer than if I was using my bare fists and just trying to pump out as much damage as I could.
Honestly, the best advice I can give you is to keep one of every weapon type in your inventory. Adjust your weapons for the certain situations. If you feel like you are surviving fairly well, just use your fists for pure damage and ownage. If you feel like the mobs you are facing are giving you more trouble than you're comfortable with, bust out one of your +Parry or Dodge weapons. Keep an open mind with your weapons

Very well put Ender. As all EQ monks know, you always carry a variety of weapons for different situations. But always use the one most benificial to you and your group!

Yes. Open character screen by pressing 'c' (default).
This screen has a lot of tabs. Leftside and bottom ones that depend on the left side ones.
On the equipment tab (top along right side) and the left most tab along the botton.
You should see you equipment and base attrubutes and vital information at bottom.
The left panel at the bottom has things like defense, damage, and resists. I think that is where the information you are seeking shall be found plus much more. Mousing over a lot of the attribute names and such yeilds a lot of information.
It is listed as a damage range. A little division if you want an actual dps stat. You skill in a weapon and weapon type can change this damage range.
I have not been concerned with dps really as I am working with some guild mates and should not be tanking except to split or save or healer. I can take aggro pretty effectively through dps.

Anyway , i have been thinking and after some time if they start patching new zones with new dungeons and usually with better gear ( better weapons,etc...) , other ppl will see their dps increasing as they get better weapons, but if we are stuck forever weaponless, how are we going to match their dps after a while ? I say this becasue i saw in another post some ppl saying that even at 40+ is still better fight with your bare fists.

that is because as we level, our fists gain power to stay appropriate for our level range.

well this is what they started out with in eq, but then the other classes began to complain that they needed all this armor and weapons and monks didnt need any ect ect. so they started balancing things out which meant monks took a big big hit it in the dps and damage dept>wasnt pretty and it was pretty late in the game.
but they never upgraded the monks armor or upgraded the weapons at any great lenght so to speak ect. so im a big fan of weapons with cool graphics and some types of armor that cool for a monk.
because whats gonna happen is the monk gonna out tank the warrior and when this starts happing the doodoo gonna hit the fan. dont mean to be a doom sayer here just rather they didnt load my fist up with tons of dps and just give us cool looking staffs an other martial arts weapons to make up the dps that way if the nerf bats HitS take it out of the weapons or the armor some where down the line they will need to balance things out .
when they do come to this point each class will have to give up somthing i say u want less dps from a monk ok take it out of my staff or sword, you want monks take more damage?? i say ok take it out of my armor!!! but dont take dps out of my kicks or backfist dont make me take more damage by less effect dodge or my fd success rate was drooped but what ever they do i just want them to "leave my monk "ALONE!!!!!!""
i hope im making sense guys n gals because this is very important issue for our class

It definetly is an important issue but one that is barely even on the horizon, but something to look out for no doubt. I've been in many balanced groups and from what I can tell a tank usually always takes aggro and I rarely can take it from him with a few exceptions, however I can usually always hand it right back to him with Goading Slap or drop my own aggro by targeting myself and using Waning Palm (I think thats the name) or of course Feign Death. I'm not sure we will see a monk out-tank a tank but there is always exceptions.
I hope to never wield a weapon, maybe hand wraps or something but no staves or swords. According to old patch notes our fists and feet at level 50 are considered Ultra-Rare weapons. I'd like to be able to play end-game with my fists and feet.

hmm i need a little clarification.
do monks lose damage from equipping claws/knuckles/hand wraps? i thought those were ideal monk hand to hand weapons.

I have not tested it specifically yet, but the general consensus is yes. I know your skill or lack there of in a weapon skill does affect damage. I have been meaning to get a good set of claws and max the skills out and then compare damage numbers from character screen and in log parses. Levels are taking long enough now it is more reasonable to do this. I really hope it will be equivalent or the "oh look. another unarmed monk' generalization will continue to grow.

I just switched form bare fists to dual wielding a claw and a knuckle, and I swear my crit chance seems lower now. it sure as hell isn't higher.

i found a fist wrap that I put in my off hand which actually increased DPS in the off hand. Primary hand I have found nothing even close (dps wise). As far as crits go ... at first go with fist in off hand I seem to have lowerd the crits. I then took it off and crits rose again. I tried a second time by putting it back on and crits seem to have stayed the same as barehanded. I dunno. Try something good just in your off hand and see if you have equal results.
But again, weapons are all situational depending on what you want to accomplish. I think for DPS bare handed is gonna always be the way to go atleast in primary

As of now at level 25, I have yet to find a pair of hand wraps or a Martial Staff that beats the DPS output of the bare fists. As I said before, the only reason I have ever used a weapon was for the added Parry / Dodge chance when tanking rather difficult mobs.
