Hello everyone, I just started playing vanguard two days ago, and I made a monk.  I came to the game because a few old EQ1 friends were playing, and it looked like fun.  Now that I am nearing level 20, and have the choose your mini-class quest, I am trying to debate which to choose.  Mostly i think I'm going to be grouping with my friends, and as a monk i want to add the most dps I can to our mini group.  We have a dread knight, bard, necromancer, and me the monk, and a disciple.  Which class should I choose to add the best to the group? Is there a way to swap classes, after you have already chosen?   What would be some good goals for a non raid monk to shoot for, by the time I hit 50?

Thanks  Smiley

Heres the thing, if you will always be grouped and want to add the most dps, dragon will be the way to go from 15-46.

46-50 Its a toss up between drunken and harmonious as far as dps.

I however advise you not to do dragon because as a harmonious monk you will bring a ton more to the table with all the debuffs.

You can swap classes any time you just repeat the quest from the grand master

GOALS:
Get the celestial ward throwing weapons (lvl 30-40 quest)
Get the cragwind weapon (lvl 35ish)
Use skinning (it will get you ultra rares for armor)
Do the unicorn OR blood hound quest ( free mount at lvl 30)
IF/WHEN they put it in do the griffon quest at 46-50

Thank you very much, these are some good things to shoot for as i start to learn the game more.  One other thing I forgot to add is, i'm on a PVP server, so that might change some things, possibly?

I went with a harmonious monk (at first, atleast) And i was wondering, do i get ONLY the abilities from a harmonious monk? or does everyone get some of each, but some are type-restircted?

Anything learned from Aum of the harmonious master is harmonious only.

Anything trained at a trainer is for all monks.

For the most part if a harmonious monk gets an attack at 25, then dragon and drunken each get their own version of it. (ala harmonious would be a debuff, dragon a dd, and drunken a taunt)

Sort of new to the monk too, even tho I am 48 now. Still learning tips and tricks. Had a couple questions about the goals you posted:

1. Is the Cragwind bladestaff still worth doing at 48?
2. What faction do you need for the Celestial Ward throwing weapons quest? What's the benefit?(I haven't seen these yet, so may be a dumb question)

Thanks in advance!

At 48 your better off doing the greystone blade staff quest.

You need +12k faction with the celestine ward to get the throwing stars...the advantage is you can summon 50 stars every 10 min, so you have an unlimited supply to pull with.  that and they are 40 range and decent dmg

1. I dont know as I only use 1handers so someone else will have to answer this.
2. The faction is in the Wardship of the Sleeping moon.  The faction is called Celestine ward.  To gain faction you must do quests (in the wardship and the encampment south one block)  and slay monsters outside the wardship, in Vol Tuniel and Thelaseen.  It takes quite a while as the monsters only give between ~ 1 - 3 faction each and you need to get nearly max faction (20k dynamic) to be able to create the legendary version of the throwing stars.  I started grinding it out at level 31 or so, doing the quests and such and after bout a full week of non stop grinding I had enough faction around level 37-38.   The quest you need is called secret weapons of leth vereal and you will not be able to get it until you have a lot of faction.  The quest NPC is outside the bank in Wardship of the sleeping moon.

The quest secret weapons of leth vereal has you slay 5x named in VT, and 5x named in Thelaseen.  That gives you a heroic weapon.  Then to upgrade it you need all 6 components inscribed on the item to get the legendary version.  When you have all the components there is a red orb SW of Thelaseen that you use to turn in for the weapon.  It is guarded by 3 level 35  4 dot golems.

The components you need are of the highest tier.  Ancient Ritual Candles of Kel, Sar, which both can be dropped of any mob in this area or bought on the broker. Tome of Quel, which drops in Vol Tuniel fairly deep.  Tome of Vurm which drops in Thelaseen ONLY on the two tower in behind the two main named mobs (the drake and the golem).  Then you need two runes, one of Zalge, and one of Eltha.  For the Zalge it is a rare drop off one of the two main named mobs, OR i've seen it drop only from the mini named (which roams around the zone) Lothlar the Archivist.  The Eltha rune drops in VT, on named mobs in the throne room, or dreadwing I have heard.  You can also get one from the Lair of the Vi'rak and I have heard that the drop rates are higher... Although the mobs are mostly 5 dot and higher.

Good luck.
