1  Monk Discussion / Monk General / Re: Monk VS Rogue VS Ranger on: September 25, 2007, 04:18:12 AM
Does anyone else see the humor in trying to say the monk class is ok by attempting to prove it MIGHT be better than what is generally perceived as the WORST class in the game?!

Have at it....but it still leaves us 14th or 15th......lol
2  Monk Discussion / Monk Tactics & Techniques / Re: A guide to monk Dmg, Techniques, and Stats on: September 15, 2007, 10:56:08 AM
Just wanted to thank you for the effort and info Fujitsu.

Excellent guide and write-up

Questions/comments.........I have played Harmonious exclusively.  Is this info pretty much the same across all styles?

and secondly, any plans to continue with techniques?   For example, I know QTM has mentioned hotkeying a swap to a 2 hander on crits.  That type of thing.  I know personally, I haven't taken the time to set myself up with those things yet even though I should.  I get on and just play, hehe
3  Monk Discussion / Monk General / Re: Monk concept. on: May 25, 2007, 04:38:59 PM
/agree with all Shengyi said
Very high dps, able to tank,  (4th best is a very apt description for the proper slot) and an outstanding puller.  Best, second best, a tie for first in pulling, who cares, but that close to the top.

We should be an avoidance tank.  That means we have stretches of several mobs where we tank just as well as a tank.  (The RNG is good to us.)   It also means we have a fight thrown in when the RNG is so bad that no 3 healers can keep us alive.   I've suggested this before,  Give us outstanding tanking when we are fighting 1 and only 1 mob.  Penalize the hell out of us when it's more than one.

And little damn utility other than pulling.  I'm a fighter, not a support class!!!

I bring em.    1 at a time or more if the group can handle it.
I tank em if I have to.
I beat the stuffing out of em  (Because no other class has to stand in front, in melee range, in non-plate!!)
I scout, cr, lead the way, and better be on my toes about the rest of the group, because I'm controlling the pace.

In short, EQ1 had monks pretty well pegged imo.

And most important.  I'm tranquil and SNARF.

4  Monk Discussion / Monk General / This guy understands monks! on: May 14, 2007, 05:09:46 PM
Quoted from a thread on Silky

"Monk/ Disciple (not sure if they belong here, only fought like 2 of them) and here's the rub: Give these guys real evasion - rogues should debuff the crud out of someone, automatically lowering their chances to hit and defend/monk however deserves the highest evasion rate in the game - and I'm not talking about some long timered buff - these guys should be able to evade tank single mobs like all get out - as if they have a shield and then some. Chain abilities should be based off of reactionary counters - evade chain should be amazing. Give them real techniques, real shaolin moves - atm they look silly and that sweep across right leg hook kick is just silly c'mon folks.: ""

This was in response to a thread asking what each class needed, whether they or not were over or underpowered.  It was taking a look at each class and was oriented toward pvp.

The more I thought about it, the more I think the poster hit the nail on the head.  But I would flesh it out a bit.  We train our entire lives to do 3 things, FD, DPS through quickness, and evade through quickness.  Nobody wants to give us the evasion we merit because it would take away from tanks.  (Ignoring them having our dps, hehe)  We don't have the armor to take hits from multiple mobs.  But if everything I do is based on quickness, speed, tactics and constant movement, I damn well ought to be able tank a SINGLE mob with the best of any class.  With no loss of dps.  I am watching his every muscle twitch.  I know what it is going to do before it even knows.

I don't want our class to be godlike or be the class of the moment.  We would need huge penalties for fighting more than one mob.  No plate=no mitigation=dead.  Defense based on evasion means RNG stretches that no 3 healers could keep us alive.  I can deal with that.  But when I'm fighting one,  I should defend like crazy.

What would this mean?  It means we can solo more like the rest of the classes.  It means that a slow and patient group with a monk as tank could handle damn challenging stuff because it MUST be one at a time.  There aren't many groups like that anymore.  It's kill, kill, kill, faster, faster, faster.  So most people still need a real tank.  It means we have a place in a group without being handed a bunch of utility crap that monks have no business supplying.  We're fighters dammit, not support personnel.

I dunno,  it just seems like that's what a monk looks like to me.

5  Monk Discussion / Monk General / Re: So the new cleric patch now puts a monk to shame as well... on: May 13, 2007, 04:01:07 PM
Funny you should put it quite that way Dom.  My wife, who plays a cleric has said to me repeatedly over the last 3 months in our game discussions:  "Maybe they just don't want monks in the game. "

I just asked her if she had anything to add.  "Nope, that's just how it looks"
6  Monk Discussion / Monk General / Re: A telling statistic... on: April 23, 2007, 03:53:50 AM
Maybe worst of all is the feeling that playing a VG monk gives me.  I feel like a hanger-on, an experience leach, a group member that everyone is allowing to be there for the ride.  Not sure of the exact way to put it, but you get the point.  The majority of my time is spent duoing with my wife who plays a cleric.  She can kill anything we can kill together.  If I'm not logged in yet, or travelling to our quest of the moment, she just starts or continues on her own.  This doesn't exactly yield a contributing feeling for me, although she downplays it as much as possible.

Every group we have joined since the game started has been because we have a cleric.  I realize that will always be the majority, but 100%?!

Yesterday we were asked to help a duo in our area attempt a 3 dot purple named.  They were 30 while we are 28.  I chased it around while one of the 30's kited it.  I saw 2 hits by me in the entire fight.  (I'm sure I missed a few but not many)  They were both BF's for damage of 14 each.  I felt so damn heroic!!!!!

I have no interest in other classes, I have 0 alts.  I loved being an EQ monk.  But I only play the adventuring sphere anymore because my wife enjoys it.  Otherwise, I'd do nothing but grind crafting WO's and dip.

VG looks, feels, and in many ways plays exactly how I want my fantasy rpg to be.  But RL beats you into the ground enough as it is.  Playing a fantasy game is not supposed to do the same.
7  Monk Discussion / Monk General / Re: Fix Feign! on: April 10, 2007, 05:05:29 PM
ok, I'm willing to try some more.  What are you calling a body pull.....just proximity aggro pulling?
8  Monk Discussion / Monk General / Re: Fix Feign! on: April 09, 2007, 04:42:22 AM
/agree   While we need more dps and more avoidance in the avoidance stances, fixing FD should be so far ahead of everything else as the #1 priority as to make the rest not even matter.
Monk is the only class I personally find fun to play and it all revolves around FD.  A REAL FD! Not one that works against just a certain number of mobs, not one that works reliably only against mobs below my level.  I want to split and scout and cr for my group.
Sure, I'd like to dps decently and I'd like to tank decently but I don't need more utility tools.  A real FD gives us all the utility we need.
FD is not just a monk class defining ability, it's a monk fun defining ability.
9  Monk Discussion / Monk General / Re: FD on: March 31, 2007, 11:29:16 AM
How is a split of a pair of mobs with nothing but FD being done?
10  Monk Discussion / Monk General / Re: FD on: March 30, 2007, 11:37:24 AM
Ok, so after 7 years of splitting in EQ and a few months from beta 3 on here, I haven't had a successful split since they changed the mob return.  After all that, I hate to even ask.....but, hehe...how are you splitting?
